Charity – Umar (RA) and Abu Bakar (RA) Competition

As Islam continued to spread, life became relatively easier for Muslims. There were news emerging through traders from various cities that Byzantine (Roman Empire) ruler is preparing to attack the Muslims. In response, the Holy Prophet (PBUH) also asked the Muslims to prepare. One of the companions of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), Umar (RA) was very keen to do something. He always felt that other companions especially Abu Bakr Siddique (RA) does a lot more than him. At that time, Umar (RA) had a decent living so he felt that he was able to give more charity than others.

Admirably, he decided to take half of all he had to the Holy Prophet (PBUH).  The Prophet of Islam (PBUH) always encouraged people to look after their families first and only give surplus in charity. When he saw Umar’s (RA) donation he asked what he left for his family to which he replied, half of his wealth. Soon Abu Bakr (RA) approached the Prophet (PBUH) with some charity donation despite being on low income. Muhammad (PBUH) asked him what he left for his family. Abu Bakr (RA) replied that he left Allah’s and his Prophet’s name for them for that is sufficient for his family. At that time, Umar realised that he can never win Abu Bakr (RA). This example demonstrates the selflessness and sacrifices of the companions of Prophet (PBUH) in the cause of Islam.

RA – May Allah be pleased with him
PBUH – Peace be upon him
